This week has been unexpectedly educational – especially for those of us who work with words for a living.

It began with “grandfathering”, which, turns out, has nothing to do with further transmission of your gene pool, but everything with old rules surviving under new policies. Then came a rapid-fire parade of terms: Cost Base Indexation, Quarantined Losses, Loss Carry-Back/Refundability, Pay Day Super, Sovereign Capability, and the how-do-you-even-say-it WATO (Working Australians Tax Offset).

Somewhere between decoding tax speak and surviving Budget week came the realisation that learning a new language also means new ways of looking at life. Sometimes, understanding a new term is about far more than understanding the term itself; it’s about catching a glimpse into an entirely different mindset.

The Federal Budget for 2026-27 didn’t exactly “fix” housing or migration - but it did quietly reshape the rules underpinning both.
